Scheduled flight to Yerevan. Meeting and transfer to the centrally located hotel with immediate reference to the hotel for the first 3 nights.
YEREVAN – CAPITAL OF ARMENIA
City tour and visit to the Erebuni Fortress Museum, a Urartean birth certificate of the city from the 8th century BC., visit the Cascade, an enormous staircase complex made of light travertine stone that extends 572 steps up a mountain slope in the center. Depending on the weather, you can enjoy the wonderful view of the city with the mountain Ararat in the background. Break-in cozy cafes and/or visit the exhibition rooms of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Afterward, a visit to the Historical Museum. Dinner in the typical restaurant. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan.
YEREVAN – ZVARTNOTS – ETCHMIADZIN – YEREVAN (60 KM.)
Drive to the Zvartnots Church, a monumental round church from the 7th century to visit the partially restored ruins. Continue to Etchmiadzin, the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the seat of the Armenian Catholicos. Visit the Church of St. Hripsime from 618, which is considered the most characteristic of all Armenian churches, and the main cathedral. Opportunity to partially participate in a service. Typical lunch in a restaurant (in the garden under the apricot trees). Return to Yerevan and visit the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial. Overnight in Yerevan.
AROUND THE MOUNTAIN ARAGATS
YEREVAN – AMBERT – SANAHIN – HAGHPAT (200 KM.)
Drive into the beautiful mountain landscape at the foot of the Aragats (4,090 m) to the fortress Ambert, a castle ruin and church from the 7th century, which is picturesquely situated on a rocky plateau. After the tour continues to the small town of Aparan with a stop at a typical bakery. Drive on over the 2160 m high Pambak Pass to the northern province of Lori and continue along the winding “Monastery street” to the village of Sanahin with the architecturally harmonious monastery academy Amenaprkich (Holy Redeemer) Church from 934 and a library worth seeing. Finally, drive to the monastery complex of Haghpat from the 11th to 13th centuries, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers one of the rare Redeemer cross-stones depicting the crucifixion. Dinner and overnight in a cozy family-run small hotel in Haghpat.
HAGHPAT – DILIJAN – LAKE SEVAN- NORADUS – SELIM PASS – YEGHEGNADZOR (220 KM.)
Drive to an area with lush deciduous forests and a short visit to the restored old town of the spa town of Dilijan. Continue to Lake Sevan, the “blue pearl of Armenia” located at 1950 m, one of the largest high mountain lakes in Europe. First visit to the Sevan Church from the 9th century, picturesquely situated on a peninsula and accessible via 230 basalt steps. Afterward, visit the cemetery in Noradus with countless cross-stones, which has been used for centuries. Continue to the famous wine region Vayots Dzor over the Selim Pass (2410m) with a photo stop at Caravanserai. Reception with a hospitable farming family and dinner with tasting of homemade wine, brandy and exotic schnapps made from different types of hawthorn. IN THE SHADOW OF THE HOLY MOUNTAIN ARARAT
HERMON – NORAVANK – KHOR VIRAP – YEREVAN (150 KM.)
Drive to the Areni-1 cave and visit the oldest scientifically dated finds of wine production. Continuation to one of the most beautiful monasteries in Armenia, Noravank Monastery, located in complete solitude and seat of the Bishops of Syunik in the 12th to 14th centuries. Lunch at Noravank. Continue to the Ararat plain to Armenia’s most important pilgrimage site, the restored Khor Virap monastery from the 4th to 17th centuries. According to tradition, Gregory the Illuminator was held in a deep pit for 15 years due to his commitment to the Christian faith before becoming an Armenian missionary. From there you have a unique view of the sacred mountain of the Armenians, the Ararat (5165 m). Return to Yerevan and visit a Duduk master, who introduces us to the secrets and sounds of the Armenian flute and invites us for coffee with cake and fruit. Hotel occupancy in Yerevan for the last 3 nights. Overnight in Yerevan.
CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF ARMENIA
YEREVAN – GEGHARD – GARNI – YEREVAN (90 km.)
Drive to Geghard (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to visit the 12th / 13th-century cave monastery at the end of a gorge, which is one of the most beautiful monasteries in the Caucasus. In an acoustic rock room, we enjoy Armenian singing from a quintet (optional). Excursion to Garni, the former summer residence of the Armenian kings and famous for the only Hellenistic temple from the 1st century that has been preserved in the Caucasus and was built on the edge of a basalt canyon. Lunch in the cottage garden, where Armenian flatbread Lavash is baked in the tandoor. Walking tour in the Azat Gorge with basalt formations. Return to Yerevan and free time for your activities. Evening concert visit (optional). Overnight in Yerevan.
FAREWELL TO YEREVAN
The farewell day begins with a visit to a farmers market. Then visit the Matenadaran scientific library, which exhibits a valuable collection of ancient Armenian manuscripts, the oldest of which dates from the 5th century. After a short coffee break, visit the Parajanov Museum. Finally, visit the famous ARARAT cognac factory with tasting. Farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant with folklore in Yerevan. Overnight in Yerevan.
